To Do List Goes Veggie! Vegan and Vegetarian Food in London
In 2017, To Do List went veggie (although one Editor continues to enjoy devouring seafood) – and one of our 2018 resolutions is to share with our loyal readers some of the very best vegan and vegetarian food in London.
Obviously, when we say share, what we mean is we’ll eat it, then tell you about it, then you can go and eat it. We’re not so good at ‘actually’ sharing food…
We’ll be on the constant look out for veggie and vegan restaurants, pop-ups, food trucks, stalls, markets and the like, as well as any restaurants proud to boast menus that cater for herbivores and carnivores.
To get you started, here are FIVE veggie/pescie/vegan beauties to get you started…
Perfect for meat eaters as well as those more enlightened souls, the Malaysian Deli is a cosy, BYOB, low-key gem! All the main dishes – authentic, home cooked Rendang, Kari Melayu, Kuah Kachang, Masak Merah, Perchik, Sambal, Madu and Berlado – can be ordered with fish, or tofu & veg, and never for more than £6.
There’s even a veggie version of their delicious Murtabak, the stuffed flat bread by which all others should be measured.
At your weakest moment, when you would give anything for some fried chicken, Temple of Hackney will keep you on the vegan wagon.
The Temple Burger – crispy fillet, bacon, cheese, lettuce, pickles with ranch mayo – and its jalapeño-laden spicy sister are so authentic that you might stop mid-munch to make sure a chicken hasn’t died for your pleasure. Fear not, this is seitan at its very best!
Three branches of this (mostly) London-based chain now feature Vegan & Veg menus – featuring vegan pancakes and breakfast plates, tasty salads, dirty-good burgers, veggie-dogs, jackfruit, and even vegan chilli cheese fries.
Expect more branches to take on the menu soon!
Once you’ve wolfed down one of What The Pitta’s Vegan Döner’s, you may start dreaming about them, or waking in the middle of the night NEEDING one, or writing an article about them and calculating how long it would take to get to Shoreditch just to get your hands on another… They’re THAT good!
Freshly Made Bread, Spiced Soya Chunks, Mixed Salad, Tzatziki (with soya yogurt), Homemade Hummus and Chilli Sauce – just perfect!
And, whilst not exclusively veggie/vegan…
Rosie & Greta Gould draw on a wealth of food cultures (they grew up in London and France, daughters of a Venezuelan-Trinidadian mum and an American dad of Eastern European Jewish heritage!) host an occasional supper club serving up amazing, home-cooked food in a warm, friendly environment.
Their January 2018 event celebrated Veganuary with a Middle Eastern menu of Meze (Hummus, Baba Ghanoush and Muhammarah with Falafel, Pita Bread and Sesame & Tahini Crisp Bread), Khoresh Torsh (a stew of sweet potato, aubergine, yellow split peas, tomato, dried prunes and apricots), and Carrot & Pistachio Cake with Tahini & Cardamom Ice Cream. The stuff of vegan dreams!
